A question for America

Recently I was listening to a podcast from Sweden about the rise in STDs due to the travelers feeling free from the restrictions of daily civil life such as marriage and family, i.e the truck driver who stops for a quickie with a road-side whore or the sailor nailing a hole in every port stopped at. These sorts of interactions are apparently spreading the diseases exponentially faster. Nevertheless, the announcer asked a question, a question that I think rarely gets asked in this country, whose lack of prudence and self-awareness rarely fails to amaze me. The question asked: Do you make sure that your freedoms don't hurt you? Do you make sure your freedoms don't hurt others, I would add.

Few people in this country consider that our freedoms could lead us beyond our means. I am scared how this lack of foresight could affect this country and our futures, nationally and globally. There is a principal here that that permeates our culture and it scares the crap out of me when I begin to think about its impact on everything from the individual life to international relations.

“the sailor nailing a hole in every port stopped at.”
At first I wanted to take offense to that. Then, remember some of the actions of some of the Sailors on my last deployment, they contrived to make legend of it. The US Navy prohibits, by Public Law (not service regulation) prostitution. They also advocate safe sex, etc. It’s drilled in peoples heads during training to no end. Now I do not take offense to the comment. Some people don’t protect themselves from their own freedoms. And even when there are provisions to protect them from some freedoms, and eliminate other freedoms, they still find a way to harm themselves, and others. So, to this end, what do I think? I think I am a despicable person, as I do not agree with their actions, yet I let it occur and watched it (or at least the precursors) with detached indifferent interest.

Good reflection.

I think these sort of anecdotes put the fear in conservatives everywhere. Truth is that plenty of people get away, disease-free. I don't mean to let you off the hook so easily, but when would you take action, verbal or otherwise? I guess you can always do it with some sick and twisted humor. That way you always make your peace and in a very subversive way, get your point across and maybe even shock them into thinking twice. I think that's the best you can do, unfortunately.
